Spelling Bee Championship
In conjunction with the Meadowbank Mall, the Straight A’s Tutoring centre will be holding the inaugural Spelling Bee competition over the September school holiday break at the Meadowbank Mall.
Entry is FREE – simply register to receive your entry pack. Return it to us and we will allocate a date and time for your preliminary round.
Timing- from 28 September to 9 October – competition days will be determined by the number of entries, and each round of competition will run between 10.30am and 2.30pm.
Age limits – it is open to Years 6 to 10. (proof of school registration will be required)
Levels – there will be two groups – Years 6 to 8 and years 9 to 10.
Prizes – Will be awarded to the winner and runners up of each group. Spot prizes will also be awarded to participants and spectators.
How it works:
- Preliminaries: 28th Sept to 2nd October
Two rounds (two oral spelling rounds) these will be held in the first week. - Quarterfinals/Semifinals: 5th to 9th October
These segments continue with oral rounds until a specific number of spellers remain. - Finals: 8th or 9th October
Live Event with audience. The final rounds continue until only one speller remains in each age category.
Spell-off: If a champion is not determined within the time limit of the final broadcast, a “spell-off” is triggered to decide the winner.
Spelling Lists
Spelling lists will be posted on our website from the 8th week of term. The judges may choose to use only these words or for example in the event of a stale-mate, may introduce additional words if they feel it is either necessary or appropriate.
Competition rules and requirements
The competition will be run under rules determined by the organisers.
The judge’s decision is final; there is no right of appeal.
Contestants must currently be enrolled in a school within the Auckland region.
